When the Overlord Dies
What happens to your clan if the leader is killed: succession through Captain or Counselor, solo founder edge cases, and when the alliance collapses.

New founders often ask whether their alliance disbands if the Overlord is killed, for example when rivals put a hitlist bounty on them and collect it through murder. Posting gold on the board does not break up the clan by itself. Only the Overlord's character death (including rebirth through a house) runs the rules below.
The alliance usually continues
Karadiyar does not delete every alliance when its leader dies. The fallen Overlord leaves the roster like any other member. If other players remain and a valid officer successor exists, the banner stays up under a new Overlord. Buildings, vault gold, members, diplomacy, and castle ownership (if your clan holds one) stay with the alliance.
Who becomes the next Overlord?
When the Overlord dies, succession happens immediately in this order:
- Captain, if you had appointed one who is still in the alliance and was not the character who died
- Counselor, if there is no eligible Captain but a Counselor remains
The promoted officer becomes Overlord; their old officer slot is cleared.
This is stricter than inactive Overlord succession (15+ days offline). After a death, the game does not skip to the highest-XP active member. Only Captain and Counselor count. If you lead a clan without either role filled, your members are exposed.
When the alliance ends
The clan is removed in these cases:
- Solo founder: If the Overlord was the only member, the alliance is deleted when they die. There is no one left to hold the banner.
- Collapse: If other members remain but there was no Captain and no Counselor to inherit (or both roles were empty when the Overlord died), the alliance collapses. Every remaining member is removed, alliance buildings are cleared, and the clan name is recorded in the alliance graveyard. Affected players receive a push notification.
What about the dead Overlord?
The former leader is out of the clan like any dead member. If they rebirth into a new life, they must join or create an alliance again; leadership does not return to them automatically.
Practical tips
- Appoint at least one trusted Captain or Counselor early, especially if you expect murder pressure.
- If the Captain dies first, succession falls to the Counselor; if both officer slots are empty, ordinary members cannot save the clan when the Overlord falls.
- Peace treaties and vault balances survive a normal leadership handover; a collapsed clan loses the shared treasury and structures tied to that alliance.
